Shortly after Sam came out as gay, they started dating Jonathan Zeizel after meeting on the set of Like I Can. The adorable new couple went public with their relationship in cute photos shared on Instagram and even enjoyed a holiday together in Australia.
However, Sam revealed during a live concert in Toronto that the relationship fizzled out after just after two months. Before singing Good Thing, the star told the crowd, “This song is very special for me today. It’s because I’ve actually had to do a very similar thing today with someone I’ve been seeing.”
Sam told The Daily Mail that they and Jonathan weren’t very well suited and that they regretted making the relationship public – “I made a mistake by posting pictures of us on Instagram and making it seem more serious than it was.”

Want to know the inspiration behind Sam’s ultimate heartbreak album? The Lonely Hour was apparently written about their manager Elvin Smith. However, Elvin was a married man and didn’t share the same love interest towards Sam.
“The Lonely Hour is about a guy that I fell in love with last year, and he didn’t love me back. I think I’m over it now, but I was in a very dark place,” Sam told The Fader. They also said that the record was written as a lesson not to make the same mistake again.
Sam never exactly named Elvin, but rumors suggested he was indeed the unrequited love the star sang about.
During their acceptance speech at the Grammys, Sam shouted out the mystery man by saying: “Thank you so much for breaking my heart, because now I’ve got four Grammys.”

This fling was ignited after Charlie King fan-girled on Twitter over Sam’s Grammy performance. He tweeted 11 complimentary messages at the singer, telling them “you are just incredible”. Finally landing the love of his dreams, rumors started circling in May 2015 that Sam and Charlie were an item after engaging in secret meet-ups at pubs and Sam’s house.
A source told the The Sun, however, that “nothing romantic happened because they decided they were better off as friends.”
That said, a few months later, the tabloids were back to their old tricks and speculated that another of Charlie’s Twitter posts was about Sam. It included a photo of his arm around a mystery fling, which he captioned, “Sometimes it takes a while to realize that the right person was there all along!”.

This rumored hookup started when Sam had an awkward run-in with Tom Daley’s fiance Dustin Lance Black on Twitter.
During their acceptance speech for the James Bond Oscar in 2016, Sam declared that they were the first gay person to be awarded the reknowened award. Dustin was quick to take to Twitter to confirm that he actually won an Oscar Award in 2009 and at the same time – warned Sam to stop texting his fiance Tom!
Of course, this spat got the people talking, but Sam never responded. They simply jumped off Twitter and removed his account. #Awkward!
Three years later, Dustin publicly apologized to Sam saying, “Sam, I am so sorry. I am a motherf***ing human being and sometimes get carried away.”
He also confirmed that Sam and Tom Daley were just texting as “pals”.

In 2016, rumors were rife that Sam and British model, Jay Camilleri were hooking up. While Sam didn’t confirm that they were dating, Jay told The Mirror that although it was “early days”, the couple were enjoying spending time together “having drinks…at Shoreditch House”.
The pair were so close, that Jay hoped Sam would patron his weight loss charity, but after that interview, they seemed to have split up and nothing further was reported on this love affair.

It looks like Sam was busy with potential boyfriends in 2016! Yet another suitor in Sam’s dating timeline is Franklin Lanke singer TayTay Stahrz.
After picking up his Oscar, Sam apparently often met up with TayTay, according to The Sun. Unable to “hide their attraction to one another”, the couple hooked up in London bars. The source told The Sun, “Sam kept cheekily grabbing Tay when he thought no one was looking and they even had a snog at the end of the night after ending up at club XXL until 5am.
Despite the hot rumors, TayTay was quick to shut them down by insisting he and Sam were “just good friends”.

Shortly after the Jay Camelli rumors, Sam’s love life was back in the centerfold, but this time with British actor Andy Newton Lee. The pair met at Coachella and seemed to spark a telephone romance, but it didn’t last the long haul.
During their said affair, a source told The Mirror: “Everyone is now talking about Sam and Andy after they got close at Coachella, but it’s still very early days.”
It was also reported that Sam was “texting other guys” while dating Andy: “Sam’s messages can be sporadic and he’s still been messaging TayTay in recent weeks, claiming he’s still into him.”
That’s all we ever heard about this apparent boyfriend.

Imagine the dreamy duet that would come out of these two! After meeting in 2016, Adam and Sam have shared a special bond that many fans hoped was something more than just friends.
The pair were snapped on numerous nights out together, both in London and Mykonos, and Adam even admitted to ET about doing “a lot of bonding”: “We did ride a rickshaw in London from one club to another, wasted, at like 3 a.m. in the morning,”.
He also clarified he and Sam were nothing more than friends: “I love that rumor, actually, the minute I heard it, I texted him and said, ‘So?’” Lambert said in response to a caller’s question. “He’s like, such a nice guy, he’s so funny [but] no, there’s no romantic rumor.”

Sam’s relationship with the 13 Reasons Why actor was their most predominant to date – and one we totally wish had lasted!
When they were captured kissing each other and holding hands in New York City, the singer confirmed their relationship during an interview on The Ellen Degeneres Show.
It seemed like Sam had finally met their ‘happily ever after’, especially after posting so many photos together on Instagram. Sadly, their love story ended after nine months due to their hectic schedules.
Sam’s album Love Goes was dedicated to their relationship with Brandon and was the therapy they needed to try and understand what they had learnt from this beautiful romance. They told The Times UK: “Brandon was wonderful. I’m still trying to figure out what I took from that relationship and what it meant to me. It’s still quite raw. All my relationships have ended in a nice way, never nasty.”
Despite that, Sam and Brandon did unfollow each other on social media, but the singer continued to speak kindly about their ex-boyfriend, claiming he was their “first ever relationship”.

Sam was snapped packing on the PDA with French furniture designer Francois Rocci in 2020, but nothing further was reported on the relationship. Shortly after a few kisses and drinks at bars, Sam told The Sun that it’s difficult handling a relationship with their busy schedule and that many of their partners struggle with the fame that comes with dating a celebrity:
“Fame in general, it takes a minute to get your head round it,” they said. “I think it’s just going to take a bit longer for me to find someone. And also I’m too busy, if I’m honest, to facilitate any sort of relationship.”
Sigh…for all the lovers that Sam has lost…we can only hope they find love soon! For now, it seems that Sam is happy being single and discovering who they are as a person, but we can’t wait to see who they finally end up with – and the beautiful love album that will follow!
