Decorate Your Christmas Table Via the Produce Aisle

Christmas Tabletop

Does your tabletop look a bit bare this holiday season?

Wouldn’t it be great if you could add a festive centerpiece with all the beautiful colors of Christmas?  Many interior designers have a unique way to decorate for the holidays with a little help from the produce aisle.

Believe it or not, the produce aisle has almost all you need need to create a beautiful holiday display AND one that you won’t have to store away once Christmas is over.

Although I am not an interior designer, I decided to create a few of my own holiday centerpieces.  So, let’s grab our grocery cart and get started…

Christmas Tabletop - artichoke

Now, Christmas decor is probably not what comes to mind when you see artichokes in the produce section – but, they are just some types of produce that can be used for creating a holiday centerpiece.

The bright, ruby color of pomegranates would look beautiful in a centerpiece, don’t you think?

holiday decor limes

I love using limes when I make my homemade salsa, but I think they would also look great in a holiday arrangement.

After spending a little time in the produce aisle, I came home with an artichoke, green apples, red onions as well as a few green & red pears.

I brought out a few serving dishes and started to see how many different arrangements I could make…

Christmas centerpiece produce

I grabbed a few pinecones and made this small centerpiece using red onions and green apples.

This smaller arrangement would look nice on a small end table, over the mantel of a fireplace or on a kitchen counter.

In addition to being beautiful, there are some other wonderful things about this arrangement – other then the candles and pine cones you won’t have to store it away when the holidays are over and most of it is edible.  It will last for a few days and is perfect for a holiday party.  You can keep it longer, but the apples, limes, red pears, artichoke and onions will need to be switched out about once a week – don’t throw them out – enjoy eating them :-)

Holiday arrangements can be as simple as grabbing a few apples and pinecones. You could also do this with red apples or pears too!

What is so wonderful about decorating this way is that because you can eat most of your ‘decorations’, in won’t make a huge dent in your pocketbook.

Using colorful produce for holiday decor is not only festive, it is an environmentally-friendly way to decorate your home.  You can eat the produce or add it to your compost pile afterward.  Another great benefit is that you won’t be taking up precious storage space when Christmas is over.

*The centerpieces will only last a few days, so if you want a longer-lasting arrangement – switch out the individual pieces with fresher produce.

These are just a few simple centerpieces that I made, but you could go even further by creating large centerpieces or maybe multiple smaller ones to decorate your home with.  In addition to apples, artichokes, limes, pears, pomegranates and red onions – you could also use cherries, eggplant, grapes and peppers.
